Value Recovery

After a business solution has been installed for a few years, it often becomes apparent that the value that is delivered to the business, by that solution, becomes less and less. This 'Application Erosion' occurs without any change to the system, but can be attributed to a reduced familiarity in all the details of the solution by the users of that system.

Staff turnover means that you progressively lose the people who you originally trained, who were most involved in the new systems and hence the most motivated. Take-up of system functionality by replacement personnel is often partial and results in some functions being replaced by more manual solutions such as spreadsheets that the new recruit is more familiar with. This 'Application Erosion' happens each time an employee moves on, so over time the system functionality and its ability to deliver value decreases significantly.
